Boston Celtics: Joe Mazzulla Makes Powerful Endorsement to 3-Time NBA Champion for the Los Angeles Lakers HC Job
Winslow Townson-USA TODAY Sports

The Los Angeles Lakers continue their head coaching search , and according to reports, they’ve narrowed their list to JJ Redick, New Orleans Pelicans associate head coach James Borrego, and Boston Celtics assistant Sam Cassell as their top candidates.

If the Los Angeles Lakers ultimately decide to bring in Cassell, the Boston Celtics will lose another important member of their coaching staff since Charles Lee has already taken the Charlotte Hornets job. Nonetheless, Joe Mazzulla couldn’t be any more proud of his colleagues.

“He’s been at every seat on the bench. So, he knows how to communicate with every single player…He’s loyal, communicates well, he’s a good coach, great coach,” Mazzulla said about Cassell via Daniel Donabedian on ClutchPoints’ X (formerly known as Twitter).

To say that Sam Cassell has a lot of experience is an understatement because he played 16 years in the NBA before becoming a full-time coach. After hanging up his sneakers, the three-time NBA champion served as an assistant for the Washington Wizards, Los Angeles Clippers, and Philadelphia 76ers before joining Boston Celtics this year.

Sam Cassell, a popular figure for the Boston Celtics

Regardless of whether he leaves Boston soon or not, Sam Cassell will always be beloved by Boston Celtics fans because of what he has done for the proud franchise.

He was part of the last championship team back in 2008, and now as an assistant to Joe Mazzulla, Sam Cassell has brought in the much-needed veteran leadership in the locker room.

“He’s a very animated guy, a lot of personality, but he’s, you know, very funny. A lot of great stories, and he knows a lot,” Jayson Tatum said about Sam Cassell in preseason. “He played 14–15 years in this league. Well-respected. And it’s great to have somebody that has been a player, had a lot of success, won championships. Learning a lot, and we love having him around.”

For now, Cassell’s main focus is about helping the Boston Celtics win Banner No. 18 this season.
